Formed in 1997, by experienced health and safety professionals, the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme, or more well known as CHAS in the building and construction industry, aims to improve health and safety standards in businesses across the UK.​

CHAS states that ‘A health & safety compliant business is a business that understands responsibility. The responsibility it has to its people to help prevent accidents in the workplace and provide a healthy working environment, and the wider responsibility it has to help manage risk’. In order to aid this responsibility and remain in line with continuously changing regulations, CHAS founded their third party accreditation. The scheme is a reliable advisor on all health and safety compliance issues, setting industry benchmarks.

In partnership with the Association of London Government (ALG), CHAS developed the main criteria held in the Approved Code of Practice which supported the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 which are now recognised as CDM 2015. CHAS is also a founder member of SSIP, Safety Schemes in Procurement. The SSIP’s main aims are to reduce health and safety assessment costs and duplication in the supply chain.

To have gained the CHAS accreditation a contractor:
